space: could life exist beyond earth?

The lighting design for ‘Space’ at the Natural History Museum aims to evoke a sense of otherworldliness, transporting visitors from Earth to Mars and to planetary bodies beyond our solar system.
Low ambient lighting allows the objects on display to shine through, telling the story of the cosmos and the scientific and technological advances that have shaped our continuing exploration of space.
Gently shifting coloured light helps orient visitors within each imagined world, while transitional lighting motifs create a sense of discovery, guiding them forward on their journey. The lighting is part of a broader sensory experience that unfolds through the overall exhibition design.
While the design is atmospheric and immersive, it remains firmly rooted in scientific reality, reflecting current understanding rather than science-fiction interpretations.
This lighting design is dedicated to the memory of our dear colleague and contemporary, Jonathan Howard, whose creative insight and enduring influence were deeply felt throughout the design process.
